Eligibility Criteria for a Canadian Study Permit

Application Process for a Canadian Study Permit

  2. Gather required documents

  3. Apply online through the IRCC website or via paper

  4. Pay the processing fee

  5. Attend biometrics appointment

  6. Wait for a decision (processing times vary)

  7. Receive a Port of Entry (POE) Letter of Introduction

  8. Enter Canada and get your study permit issued at the airport

Documents Required for Study Visa Application

Typical documents include:

  • Valid passport

  • Letter of acceptance from a DLI

  • Proof of funds (bank statements, GIC, scholarship letters)

  • Statement of Purpose (SOP)

  • Passport-sized photos

  • Medical exam (if applicable)

  • Police certificate (if applicable)

  • Custodian declaration (for minors)

Work While Studying in Canada

International students can work up to 20 hours per week during academic sessions and full-time during scheduled breaks.

  • No separate work permit needed if the study permit includes work conditions

  • On-campus and off-campus work is allowed

  • Many students work in retail, hospitality, or internships related to their field

Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP)

After completing a program of at least 8 months from an eligible DLI, you may apply for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP). It allows you to:

  • Work for any employer in Canada

  • Gain Canadian work experience for PR

  • PGWP duration matches the length of your study program (up to 3 years)

Pathway to Permanent Residency for International Students

Many international students transition to PR through programs like:

  • Canadian Experience Class (Express Entry)

  • Provincial Nominee Program (PNP)

  • Quebec Experience Program (PEQ)

  • Agri-Food Pilot, Atlantic Immigration Program, etc.
